01 Overview

About this format

Architectural elements are profiled, turned or carved stone pieces made to drawings: steps, sills, cornices and mouldings, balusters, capitals, columns, carved panels and basins. Each piece is made for the project it is drawn for. Travertine is a standard format; tuff and basalt are quoted on request.

This format covers the pieces that give a building its detail. On a facade: window surrounds, sills, cornices and string courses. On a stair: balusters, newel posts and balustrades. In a garden or a hall: columns, capitals, carved panels, friezes and basins. Mouldings are measured by the linear metre.

Depending on the piece, production combines sawing, profiling, turning and hand finishing. Our photographs show turned balusters and column drums, a carved capital and a relief panel.

Dimensioned drawings with sections and profiles allow an accurate quotation; a sketch or a reference photograph is enough to start the conversation. Describe how pieces join and are fixed: dowels, anchors, joint widths. For carved or complex pieces, agree a sample or mock-up before the full run, and ask for pieces to be marked so that they arrive in laying sequence.
