01 Overview

About tuff

Tuff is a rock formed from volcanic ash that was ejected, settled and consolidated over time. It is generally lighter and more porous than dense stones, with a granular surface and visible natural variation in tone. Armenia has a long tradition of building in tuff, and the tuff architecture of Yerevan is widely known.

PetroStone supplies tuff through partner quarries in Armenia. The range covers black tuff and coloured tuff. Tones vary by quarry and batch, so tone is agreed on a sample.

Slabs, tiles, cut-to-size pieces and architectural elements made to drawings are quoted on request. Tuff is generally easy to saw and carve, which suits profiled work and carved details. The same softness and porosity call for more care on exposed horizontal surfaces and in wet or freezing conditions.

Water absorption, frost behaviour and strength differ widely between tuff deposits. Ask for test data for the specific stone, climate and use before you specify, especially for facades and other exposed work.

02 Colours

Colours and variants

Tuff is supplied in two ranges. Tones vary by quarry and batch, so colour is agreed on a sample.

    Black tuff

Black tuff is a dark, granular volcanic ash stone supplied through partner quarries in Armenia. It is not basalt: tuff is lighter and more porous, and it behaves differently. Shade and surface texture can vary by quarry and batch, so approve a sample before ordering.

    Coloured tuff

Coloured tuff is the non-black range of Armenian tuff, supplied through partner quarries in Armenia. Tones vary by quarry and batch, so colour is agreed on a sample. The swatch shown is a visualisation of one red tone, not a photograph.

05 Data and documents

Technical data and documents

Values appear here only when a test report for the stone we supply backs them. The documents we can send are listed with them.

No verified test values yet

Technical documentation is provided with quotations when available for the selected stone. List the tests your project requires in the enquiry, and we will tell you what is available.

What to ask for

Ask for results measured on the stone and finish you are considering. The standard tests, what each one measures and how to read a report are explained on the technical data page.

06 Export

Packing and export

Packing depends on the product: blocks, slabs, tiles and shaped pieces are protected and secured differently. We confirm the packing for each order.

Export packing uses ISPM-15 treated timber where the destination requires it.

07 FAQ

Questions about tuff

01 Where do your tuff and basalt come from?

Tuff and basalt are supplied through partner quarries in Armenia. Tell us the stone, tone, format and finish you need and we confirm what can be supplied. Name the stone in every enquiry: black tuff and basalt are both dark, but they are different stones.

02 Will my order match the approved sample exactly?

Natural stone varies in tone and pattern, between blocks and within a block, so a sample is a reference rather than an exact match. Agree how much variation is acceptable. For large areas, ask for material from the same lot and blend packs during installation. We confirm in the quotation how supply is prepared for your project.

03 What should I check before specifying stone outdoors?

Check the slip resistance of the finished surface, frost and de-icing salt exposure, water absorption, the thickness your fixing or bedding system needs, and tone consistency across the area. Performance depends on the specific deposit, the finish and the installation, so confirm test data for your climate and use.

04 Can you make pieces to our drawings?

Yes. Cut-to-size pieces and architectural elements are made to drawings: steps, sills, cornices, mouldings, balusters, capitals, columns, carved panels and basins. Travertine is a standard format; tuff and basalt are quoted on request. Send dimensioned drawings in PDF, DWG or DXF.

05 Can you provide technical data sheets and test reports?

Technical documentation is provided with quotations when available for the selected stone. If your project needs specific tests, such as water absorption, flexural strength or slip resistance, list them in the enquiry so we can tell you what is available.
