03 Applications
Stone for interior floors
Tiles, slabs and French pattern sets for interior floors.
01 Overview
About this application
An interior stone floor has to wear evenly, clean easily and look right in the light of the room. Tile format, finish and pore treatment decide all three.
Travertine is the stone recommended here for interior floors. It is supplied as tiles, strips, French pattern sets and slabs, in vein cut or cross cut, with filled or unfilled pores. Honed, matt and polished finishes suit most interiors; antiqued gives a softer, aged surface.
Specify the tile or slab size, the thickness and any calibration requirement for the installation method. Flatness and edge tolerance control lippage between units, so state them. Check the compatibility of the adhesive and, if the floor is heated, of the whole system.
Plan for maintenance. Travertine is a calcareous stone, so acidic cleaners can etch it, and kitchens and bathrooms call for sealing and a cleaning plan. Lay out tiles from several packs and blend them as you go, because tone and pattern vary between pieces.
