03 Applications
Stone for urban infrastructure
Plazas, street paving and public steps in hard-wearing stone.
01 Overview
About this application
Public space asks for stone that tolerates heavy wear, weather and machine cleaning. The specification is driven by traffic, climate and the maintenance methods the owner will use.
Dense, fine-grained volcanic stones such as basalt are traditionally used for paving, steps and plazas because they are hard and absorb little water. Basalt is the stone recommended here for urban work. Slabs, tiles and cut-to-size pieces in basalt are quoted on request, and finishes are confirmed per enquiry.
Kerbs and setts are quoted per enquiry: send the profile drawing, the stone and the quantity, and we confirm what we can supply. Describe the traffic the surface will carry, because it sets the thickness, the base and the finish.
For public projects, ask for documentation early. Technical documentation is provided with quotations when available for the selected stone. List the tests your tender requires, such as slip resistance, abrasion and frost, so that we can tell you what is available.
02 Checklist
What to check
Points to settle before you specify stone for this use. Ask for test data on every point that matters to your project.
- 01 Traffic load: pedestrian, light vehicle or heavy vehicle, and the thickness and base it needs
- 02 Abrasion and polishing under wear, which can make some surfaces slippery over time
- 03 Slip resistance, wet and dry, and how it changes with wear
- 04 Freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts
- 05 Staining from oils and fuels
- 06 Tolerances and edge detail for mechanical laying and tight joints
- 07 Availability of matching units for later repairs and extensions
- 08 Documentation your tender requires, such as test reports
