Architectural stone details
Cornices, mouldings, window surrounds, columns, capitals and carved panels.
01 Overview
About this application
Details give a building its character: cornices, window surrounds, columns, capitals, balusters, friezes and carved panels. In stone they are made to drawings, piece by piece.
Travertine architectural elements are a standard format: profiled, turned and carved pieces made to your drawings. Tuff has long been a carving and building stone in Armenia, and tuff elements are quoted on request.
Production combines sawing, profiling, turning and hand finishing, depending on the piece. How fine a profile can be depends on the stone. Softer stones carve easily, but their sharp edges are more vulnerable. Denser stones hold crisper edges but take longer to work.
Send dimensioned drawings with sections and joint details. For carved or complex pieces, agree a sample or mock-up before the full run. Where new pieces must match existing stonework, send photographs and, if possible, a sample of the old stone.
02 Checklist
What to check
Points to settle before you specify stone for this use. Ask for test data on every point that matters to your project.
- 01 Dimensioned drawings with profiles, joints and fixing details
- 02 Carving depth and edge durability: how fine a profile the stone can hold
- 03 Weathering of horizontal surfaces such as cornices and sills: drips and run-off
- 04 Colour matching between new pieces and existing stonework
- 05 Tonal consistency across a set of pieces
- 06 Anchoring, dowels and joint widths
- 07 Mock-up or sample approval for carved pieces
- 08 Packing and marking so that complex pieces arrive in laying sequence
