Stone for landscaping

Paving, steps, balustrades and garden elements.

Travertine balustrade installed outdoors

01 Overview

About this application

Gardens, terraces and courtyards combine paving, steps, walls and ornamental pieces. Stone ties them together when tone and finish stay consistent from one element to the next.

Typical stone elements are paving, steps, copings, walls built from split-face strips, balustrades, newel posts and basins. Pavers and steps are standard travertine formats. Balustrades and carved pieces are made to drawings as architectural elements.

Travertine gives a light surface that tends to stay cooler underfoot in direct sun than dark stone. Basalt gives a dark, dense surface and a strong contrast. Choose by climate and by how the space is used: bare feet, pool edges and slopes call for a finish with proven grip.

Near water and planting, consider chemistry as well as appearance. Pool chemicals, fertilisers and de-icing salts can affect stone, and textured surfaces collect moss and dirt. Ask for test data and agree a maintenance plan for the stone you choose.

02 Checklist

What to check

Points to settle before you specify stone for this use. Ask for test data on every point that matters to your project.

  3. 03 Frost, irrigation water and drainage under and around the stone
  4. 04 Chemical exposure: pool chemicals, fertilisers and de-icing salts
  5. 05 Weathering, and moss or lichen growth on textured finishes
