01 Overview

About this format

Slabs are large-format panels sawn from quarry blocks. They are used for floors, walls and facade cladding, and as stock for tiles and cut-to-size work. Travertine slabs are supplied in vein cut or cross cut, with filled or unfilled pores, and are sold by area in square metres.

A slab is a flat panel sawn from a block, then finished on one or both faces. Slabs from the same block share tone and pattern, so they suit surfaces that should read as one piece, such as large wall areas, floors and worktops. Slabs from different blocks can differ, which is normal for natural stone.

In general, blocks are sawn into slabs on gang saws, bridge saws or disc saws, then ground to the required finish. For travertine the finishes are polished, honed, matt, antiqued, bush-hammered, sawn and split-face. The pore treatment, filled or unfilled, is a separate choice. Vein cut slabs show long banding; cross cut slabs show a cloudier pattern.

Specify thickness and size by the way the slab will be used. Facade cladding thickness follows the fixing system; floors and worktops follow the substrate and the load. If continuity of pattern matters, say whether you need slabs from one block or one lot, and we confirm what can be supplied.
