01 Overview

About this format

Blocks are the quarry output: squared pieces of stone sold for sawing and processing elsewhere. Travertine blocks come from our own quarry at the Ararat deposit in Armenia and are sold by volume, in cubic metres. Once sawn, they become the slabs, tiles and elements used in the applications listed here.

A block is a squared piece of stone cut from a quarry bench. Its dimensions, tone, banding and natural voids decide how many usable slabs it will yield, so processors judge blocks on appearance and soundness as well as on size. Pores, banding and colour shifts are part of travertine. Agree in writing which natural features are acceptable before the order.

In general, benches are cut free with chain saws or diamond wire saws, then squared and stacked for loading. Blocks are heavy, so the weight per piece, the loading method and the handling equipment at the destination need to be agreed early. Export packing uses ISPM-15 treated timber where the destination requires it.

If you plan to saw the blocks yourself, say which pattern you intend to produce, vein cut or cross cut. The orientation of the banding in the block decides what each cut will show, so discuss it before a block is selected. Tell us the stone, the tone, the dimensions your equipment can accept and the quantity in cubic metres.
