01 Overview

About this format

Steps are stair treads, risers, landings and thresholds cut to a stair drawing. Travertine steps are a standard format. For tuff and basalt, ask us: stair pieces are discussed as cut-to-size or architectural elements, which are quoted on request.

A stone stair is a set of dimensioned pieces: treads, risers, nosings, landings and thresholds, with curved or carved steps and newel posts as special pieces. Each piece is cut from a slab or block to the drawing, so the stair schedule drives the order.

Safety and wear are decided at the nosing and the tread surface. Exterior stairs usually take a textured finish such as bush-hammered or antiqued; interior stairs may be honed. Check the local rules for rise, going and slip resistance, and ask for test data for the finish you choose. Nosings are the most exposed edge, so tread thickness and edge profile deserve as much attention as the stone.

Send a stair schedule with the number of steps, the going, the rise and the width, and the thickness you propose. Add the nosing profile, the support condition and the finish. Mention curved flights, landings and posts so that they are quoted together, and agree how long, thin pieces will be packed.
