01 Overview

About this format

Tiles are cut to modular sizes for floors and walls. The range covers tiles, narrow strips for cladding, and French pattern sets in which several sizes are laid together. Tiles are sold by area in m²; strips are sold by the linear metre.

Tiles are cut from slabs to a defined size and thickness, then finished and, where required, calibrated so that thickness is consistent. Strips are narrow lengths, often used for wall cladding and available with a split face. French pattern is a set of several tile sizes laid together in a repeating layout, so it is specified as a pattern rather than as a single size.

For travertine, the cut and the pore treatment shape the look of a tile. Vein cut gives long, roughly parallel banding that suits linear layouts. Cross cut gives a cloudy, mottled pattern. Filled pores give a flat surface that is easier to clean; unfilled pores keep the natural texture. Tone varies between tiles, so lay out from several packs and blend them as you go.

State the format, the size or sizes, the thickness, the finish and the edge. Say whether the tiles are for floors or walls, indoors or outdoors, and how they will be fixed, because the method affects thickness and tolerance. Send a layout drawing or a schedule for French pattern and for any area with a defined set-out. Basalt and tuff tiles are quoted on request.
